Vehicle Dependent Expedition Guide By Tom Sheppard
Okay, I admit this book really is not the “Suggested Read” of the week. This book really is “THE” book. Referred by some adventurers as the bible of overland and is so well known in overland circles that we commonly refer to it as simply VDE.
I include it here because no overland adventure blog, that features a suggested read section, would be worth anything without the inclusion of this classic. Most of you already know of this book and hopefully most of you own it already. I say this for two reasons. The first is simple. All vehicle dependent overlanders have got to read this book- period. The second reason? If you don’t have it, you are going to have an adventure just getting it. You will probably pay a pretty penny too.
My copy has spent time on several continents, is full of red Africa dust and is dog-eared and full of yellow sticky notes in a hundred places. I have the first edition. There is a second edition, and rumor has it that there is also a limited 2.1 edition. Word has it that Tom Sheppard will release no more editions as he focuses on other books.
I have seen prices range from around $80 all the way up to $750 (yes, I wrote $750). The links below might be a start if you don’t have the book.
